I really enjoy the two weeks of Olympic competition. Not just because I usually run the low key office betting pool (lol). But I enjoy seeing the amazing feats of athleticism that humans are capable of. Well, what some super talented and dedicated humans are capable of.
The sports I watched closest this year were the canoe, skateboarding, and of course gymnastics. Bravo to all the amazing competitors. Just for the record, I am firmly on Team Simone Biles. She made the right choice for her health and body when she withdrew from the team finals. No one should second guess that. The vitriol directed to her was awful. Unfortunately, I think to some degree the negative reaction to her decision was motivated by sexism and racism.
Water sport events do not get much coverage in the US press. Probably because the US teams do not often win any metals. Regardless of what country wins, I think the athletes are amazing. They make the near impossible look like smooth ballet.
The Slalom whitewater course in particular is just mind bowing. The goal is to navigate your boat down river... through sets of whitewater RAPIDS... without falling... in the fastest time... and also fit your body through a series of SMALL HANGING GATES... and do some of them BACKWARDS aka traveling UPSTREAM against the roaring current. Just staying upright in those rapids is damn near impossible.
If you have never watched this event you should watch the 90 second Gold Metal run by Benjamin Savsek of Slovenia. Click the link to have your mind blown ! Oh, and dont worry, we do not do anything like this on the GuidedCanoeTours.com trips. lol
As always if you have questions or ideas about the trips just shoot me a message here w the contact form or on Instagram @bd_markey
